Mathematics
Department Intent
Secure It. Explain It. Use It.
Knowledge in Mathematics | We follow the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Mathematics specification, building strong mathematical foundations through focused practice and retrieval to ensure knowledge sticks and develops over time. Pupils master essential skills while gaining a deep understanding of how maths connects to everyday life. Emphasising fluency, logical reasoning, and critical thinking, we prepare learners to confidently tackle exams and real-world challenges. Independent and collaborative learning are balanced to support all pupils and foster a lasting enjoyment of maths. |
Curriculum in Mathematics |
Our curriculum guides pupils to think clearly, reason logically, and communicate precisely using mathematical language. Key topics are regularly revisited and built upon, following a carefully planned progression that deepens understanding and strengthens retention. Through targeted vocabulary teaching, reasoning tasks, and mathematical discussions, pupils learn to explain their thinking clearly. Resources like Pearson Active Learn support learning, while problem-solving and real-world links bring maths to life. |
Teaching and Learning in Mathematics |
Expert teaching ensures smooth progression from KS3 to KS4, adapting lessons to meet all learners’ needs. Retrieval practice is embedded in every session to boost long-term memory, while varied tasks challenge pupils to apply their knowledge across different contexts. By fostering resilience and encouraging real-world application, we equip pupils with the confidence and skills to use maths beyond the classroom and in everyday situations. |
Assessment in Mathematics | Assessment is vital to securing strong foundations. Pupils complete end-of-unit and half-term assessments to consolidate learning and identify gaps early. Baseline checks guide targeted interventions to keep everyone on track. Clear, actionable feedback empowers pupils to take ownership of their progress. Retrieval and reflection activities are built into lessons to deepen understanding both inside and outside the classroom. |
Learning Beyond the Classroom in Mathematics |
We provide rich opportunities to extend learning and apply maths creatively outside lessons. Pupils benefit from weekly access to extracurricular specialist support, past papers, and online platforms such as MathsWatch (Click here to access the MathsWatch Pupil Guide), which supports independent practice and consolidation. Over the next year, we plan to introduce logic puzzles and collaborative games to encourage teamwork and explanation skills. Enrichment activities like the UK Maths Challenge, Big Bang Fair, and Maths Feast broaden horizons, connecting maths to innovation and inspiring lifelong curiosity. |
